How to Get Organized (Article 9)

Organizing can feel overwhelming at times. But it doesn’t have to be. Get organized by organizing the way you think about your tasks. It’s simple, but it works.

What is the one thing that stops you from getting things done? Is it the constant flow of distractions?

The answer is yes, but the trick is to stop looking at the distractions as something bad and start looking at them as opportunities.

Look at the distractions as an opportunity to practice your productivity skills. Instead of just looking at the distraction and feeling overwhelmed, try to take an active approach.

In this case, I want you to create a distraction-free workspace, which means that all of your distractions are moved outside of the room where you are working.

Instead of working in the kitchen, I want you to work in a separate room. This makes it much easier to focus on the task at hand.

I want you to focus on a single task at a time. That means no switching between tasks.

Let’s say you are writing an article for a client. Instead of trying to write in a busy area, make sure you don’t leave your desk. Don’t let distractions pull you away from your task.

Keep in mind that you will never be able to do everything. So when you feel overwhelmed, you should choose the task that has the highest priority.

I also want you to set a timer for 20 minutes. That means you are only allowed to look at your phone for 20 minutes. If you find yourself distracted by something, put your phone away and continue to work.

Set a timer for 20 minutes.

You may not be able to get all of the tasks done during this time. But if you are really focused, you will be able to get a lot done.

When you complete a task, mark it off your list. If you have several items on your list, use a different color pen.

You can also use a sticky note on your monitor. Or you can use an electronic device to mark tasks off your list.

When you finish your work, reward yourself with a reward. A reward could be a book, a pedicure, or a massage.

This may sound like a lot of work, but I promise you that you will feel more productive. Plus, when you have a clean and organized workspace, it’s much easier to get work done.
