The period following the civil War, in 1877, Rutherford B.Hayes took office of president of United State. He was the nineteenth president of USA. His father, farmer Rutherford Hayes died before Rutherford was born. He was an excellent student attended Kenyon College and Harvard Law school. Rutherford was an honest and dignified man.He supported moderate policies and measured change. One expectation was alcoholic drinks, banned wine and liquor from the white house.
Rutherford’s critics pointed out that new president had earned his position only because of party polices, they called him,” Rutherfurd”, and ”His Fraudulency”. but later on, he generally regarded as an independent President, who operated outside of party loyalties. He withdrew federal troops from Southern States, which were not very effective, and the officials agreed, so period knew as Reconstruction officially ended. But as the year went on, the rights of black Americans were increasing violated. As a result, part of Hayes’s legacy is one of betrayal, his policy permitted systems violence and racism to continue for decades.
Another of Hayes important act was to reform the country’s civil service, although his goal was good one, but his action shocked and angered many members of Congress. By the second half of his term, he had restored, some of Americans trust in government. He had helped ease the tension between the North and South, He stabilized the economy, increased the power of presidency and had prepared the way for major civil service reforms.
Some historians suggest that Hayes would be better remembered if he had stayed a second term and supervised some of the gains begun in his first year, but Hayes had promised that he would serve only one time as president. Rutherford died in January 17, 1893, Fremont, Ohio, age was 70.
