    After the failure of Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce, had not resolve the country’s increasing division
    over slavery, James Buchanan was the third unsuccessful and the last President before the American civil war. He was a gifted lawyer, member of U.S Congress, a secretary state and a diplomate, who could not resolve the issue of slavery.
    James Buchanan belonged a wealthy family was born in the Northern State of Pennsylvania. James Buchanan was the only U.S. president who never married, because of some family politics. He could not get his love to marry.
    Democratic party chose him in 1856, But he was sure, the country would soon be at war. He had clear ideas about slavery. Publicly and politically, Buchanan was a fierce defender of the constitution and slavery as a constitutionally right. Privately, he seemed aware and comfortable with the ideas of black people working for him in ways that white people could not. His image also suffered because of an event known as the raid on Harper’s Ferry. The raid was led John Brown, and his goal was to foment an uprising that would eventually lead to a war against enslavement. Buchanan sent the U.S Marines and Robert Elee against the raiders who were captured. Brown was hanged for murder treasons and conspiring with enslaved people. But the event further divided Americans. Though Buchanan had many good qualities, he did not want to harm the country, but today many historians agree James Buchana was one of American president.
